Confirmation Bias: You See What You're Looking For

A person who believes crypto is the future will notice adoption news and disregard fraud cases. Someone skeptical of crypto will do the opposite. Neither is lying about what they remember. That's sunk cost thinking. The money is gone. It cannot affect the right decision going forward. The right decision is purely about future costs and benefits. Availability Heuristic: Recent and Memorable Feels Likely
When estimating how common something is, your brain uses availability: how easily examples come to mind.
If you've recently read about plane crashes, flying feels riskier. If you know someone with cancer, cancer feels more common. If you see crime in your news feed constantly, crime feels prevalent in your neighborhood (even if statistics show otherwise).
News, social media, and entertainment all exploit this. They show you the rare, the shocking, the memorable. Your brain interprets this to mean the rare is common. Studies on availability heuristic show the effect is robust and automatic.
What Most People Get Wrong
Many people respond to learning about cognitive bias by trying to eliminate it. They can't. These patterns are built into human perception. No amount of self-awareness erases them.
What actually works is different: knowing which biases affect you most, and building systems that compensate. Use written checklists before major decisions to catch confirmation bias. Get input from people with different starting positions. Set rules about sunk costs in advance so emotions don't override them in the moment. Accept the anchor is there, then deliberately adjust your estimate beyond it.
The goal isn't to become a perfectly rational robot. It's to understand the specific ways your particular brain misleads you, and design your decision-making around those patterns.
